LDGCBR email circulation lists (at ldgcb.org.uk)
A number of circulation lists are maintained by the Guild, some for notifications to members and towers, either routine or exceptional, some for Officers and others with particular interests, and some for circulation of news. They were created originally by John R Ketteringham for sending circulars about the Guild Newsletter during his Editorship, but they are now administered by the Webmaster/Postmaster on behalf of the Guild Website Committee, although not strictly connected with the website as such. Keeping the membership details of each Branch list up-to-date can only sensibly be done by the appropriate Branch Secretary. Details of update procedures were sent to each Branch Secretary in late 2007.
The lists are all hosted using GNU Mailman. A list of them can be found here. A Quick Reference Card for editing the lists can be found here.
Each of the six branches will have three circulation lists. In the addresses shown, bbb is the branch - cb: Central, eb: Eastern, edb: Elloe Deaneries, nb: Northern, sb: Southern, wlb: West Lindsey.
The first list is "Members" <members@bbb.ldgcb.org.uk>, which should include all members of that branch known to have an email address. Messages to this list can only normally be sent by the Guild Master, Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, Webmaster, Newsletter Editor, Peal Secretary, Report Secretary, and such Branch Officers as the Branch may choose (defaulting to the Branch Secretary initially). This list was set up for each branch in late 2007.
The second list is called "Officers" <officers@bbb.ldgcb.org.uk>, containing the generic email addresses of all the Branch Officers. Messages to this list can only normally be sent by the same Guild Officers as for "Members", and all the Branch Officers. This list was set up for each branch in late 2007.
There will also soon be a third list called "Towers" <towers@bbb.ldgcb.org.uk> containing the generic email addresses of all the towers in the Branch where there is a person who will receive emails for the tower and who will pass on Guild communications to the tower notice board or Tower Captain as appropriate. Messages to this list can only normally be sent by same Guild Officers as for "Members", and such Branch Officers as it may choose (defaulting to the Branch Secretary initially), and also tower correspondents may send to it, to assist communication between towers. People will be advised as and when the Branch Towers lists become "live" in due course.
There are also "central" (not branch-specific) circulation lists: "Misc" <misc@ldgcb.org.uk> is used to send urgent news and other information to people who wish to maintain contact but are not current LDGCBR members. This list initially includes a number of members who will need gradually to be moved into their appropriate Branch Members list.
Two new ones were added for 2008: "Branch Secretaries" <branchsecs@ldgcb.org.uk> containing email addresses of all Branch Secretaries of the Guild, and "Guild Officers" <officers@ldgcb.org.uk> containing email addresses of all (non-branch) Officers of the Guild.
The Towers lists for Branches were to have been completed after the recent Data Protection Questionnaires had been processed. Additional circulation lists and facilities may be added later as become necessary. Lists of members of individual towers can be added later.
Important note: Officers posting to the lists must do so using their appropriate generic email address (in the "From" field) to avoid automatic rejection! It also makes it clear that the email is about a Guild or Branch matter.
Please use the Guild list system rather than "home-grown" ones - the Mailman system is designed so that more than one person can use/administer them, and there are other important benefits, including the archive of messages sent. Please do not create lists which quote all the people's email addresses to each other. This may not comply with their wishes nor with the Data Protection guidelines. Use of private lists is also liable to be blocked by ISP anti-spam policies.
In all email addresses and URIs please use lowercase throughout. For a list of generic email addresses used in the Guild, click here.
