Young Ringers’ Outing August 2022

On one of the hottest days of the year, 9 young ringers and their transporters met at Surfleet for the first tower of their young ringers’ outing. Fortunately the church was cool but the welcome from Annette was warm – drinks, biscuits and chocolates were much appreciated. The bells were an interesting challenge with comments like “I think I’m going to fall over” when ringing the bells around the West door. With the help of the adults, some respectable rounds were achieved on all twelve bells and Bob Triples was rung on the back 8. The amazing lean on the tower will be remembered for a long time.

We then went to Surfleet’s very impressive park for our picnic lunch. Shade was provided over the picnic benches by some very large trees. While many of the YRs braved the sunshine to have a go on the exercise machines and adventure playground equipment, the adults were content to sit and watch. The handbells came out to give a few YRs the opportunity to have a go at plain hunt on 6. We then had a game of rounders, with everyone acting as a fielder. Surfleet’s playground was a perfect venue for the group.

We then went on to Quadring where very springy ropes made these bells tricky to ring even by the most experienced adults. All stays were left intact, much to the organiser’s relief. Interestingly, the church had some sort of sonar system – maybe to deter bats – all the young ringers complained about the noise it made. Not one of the adults could hear it! Liquid chocolate “Heroes” were enjoyed here, having been cooking nicely in the car all morning.

Our final tower was Billingborough, a big contrast to our last two towers. The bells were very easy to ring and some good call changes and Bob Triples was accomplished. All the YRs acquitted themselves really well throughout the day and were a delight to be with. Well done to Will and Elizabeth who ran the ringing. Thanks go to all the adults who supported the day and to the tower captains of the churches for their arrangements. Another YR outing in being planned; hopefully during the October half term holiday. So keep this week in mind – we would love more YRs to take part.
